Phuket, Thailand
867 km south from Bangkok, mountainous Phuket is Thailand's largest island, approximately the size of Singapore. It is situated off the west coast of Thailand in the Andaman Sea and is surrounded by 32 other smaller islands.
Phuket is the country's smallest province, with about 300,000 inhabitants, and the second least populated province in Thailand. For many centuries, Phuket was an important stop for trading ships on the route between India and China. It has also had strong links to the prolific tin trade.
Today Phuket is the country's major tourist attraction. The island is sparsely populated outside Phuket Town although this is changing due to tourist demands. The landscape is one of forested hills, coconut groves, rubber plantations and a coastline dotted with much varied marine life. The island and surrounding smaller islands form Phuket Province, with a total area of 570 square kilometres. In the north, Phuket is connected to the mainland by two bridges. Phuket has a great range of modern amenities and entertainment combined with beautiful beaches, warm crystal clear waters, attractive landscapes and a fascinating history and culture. Most beaches are on the west coast, with Phuket Town to the south-east and the airport in the north.
Langkawi, Malaysia
South of Thailand, adjacent to the border, lies Langkawi, an archipelago of 99 islands. Langkawi is 30km off the coast of the Malaysian peninsula and part of Malaysia's Kedah state. Langkawi Island (Pulau Langkawi) is very much the largest of the archipelago and one of only two that are inhabited. There are quality resorts and other facilities in Langkawi. The area offers lovely white sand beaches including Pantai Cenang, Burau Bay, Pantai Kok and Pantai Datai to name some of the best.
Langkawi has lush jungle and craggy mountains. The 10,000 hectares of Langkawi and its 99 islands were declared a Geopark by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in 2007.
Both Phuket and Langkawi have idyllic tropical weather, ideal for relaxing beach and water sport holidays. Temperatures remain year round around 30 degrees centigrade.
